Free retro racing game

CrossCountry's XC is a prototype for a foot racing game that has been published on itch.io. You compete against other runners using a retro 2D interface. Follow the arrows to navigate through different terrains. Although the interface and mechanics are simple, the game is constantly being improved.

Race on foot

Most racing games have you riding a bike or mountainbike, if not a fully-fledged car. Even games with simple vehicles, like Bike Unchained add extra features to spice things up. If the title is about foot racing, it's often exciting and a little too crowded, such as Run Race 3D.

XC does not accept any of these conventions. Instead, it creates a simple, follow-the path race that pits you against other 2D runners. You will need a Windows or Mac computer, a keyboard, patience, strong fingers, and a lot of patience.

Straightforward mechanics

You will receive a pre-made avatar once you launch the game. There are no customization options. XC takes out all the unnecessary bells and whistles to get you directly to your first race. There are three types of XC. You start with Junior Varsity. If you win it enough, Varsity will be your next level. You'll unlock Elite races by repeating the process.

Although the game is a simple one that requires you to press keys, there are many things to consider while you play. A stamina bar will appear at the top of your screen. It will show how you run and how you sprint.

While staying close to other characters can help you conserve power, there is always the possibility of colliding with them. If you're not careful, you could run into another object. This makes this a difficult title to master.

Graphics made from paper

The gameplay is very engaging, but the developer hasn’t spent much time on the graphics. The simple, 2D elements are purposeful. They stated that they wanted a retro look. However, the environment in which you are racing doesn't give you any sense of immersion. It is dull and poorly designed, despite the smooth gameplay experience.

Needs polishing

XC is still a small game, even though it is in prototype mode. It's easy to understand but difficult to master, making it very engaging. There is not much else to do, except for the races. The graphics also need to be polished to achieve the same level of quality as the gameplay.
