The Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant explained

The Windows 8 Upgrade Advisor is a Microsoft program that allows you to check if your computer is compatible with Windows 8. If it is, then you can purchase it at a reduced price. It scans all your devices and programs for possible conflicts, and then gives you a complete report on what devices or programs might be preventing you from running Windows 8 smoothly. All this is done through a single interface. It doesn't require you to scan your computer manually or spend time trying to figure out which programs are causing problems. You can simply open the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant and scan everything to give Windows a clean slate.

To use the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant, first launch it. Click "scan" in the bottom left-hand corner. After scanning your system, you'll see a summary of the problems found. Follow the instructions on screen and click "get devices or programs to update". Once you have selected the devices that you want to update, click "run". Once you're done, you can see which devices are compatible and which are not. This will let you know beforehand what you need to buy in order to run Windows 8.1.

If you don't use the Windows 8.1 Setup disc, it will detect all components and check if they are compatible. You will be notified if any components are not compatible with Windows. If your hardware isn't compatible with Windows Vista, you don't have to buy it. If you're upgrading from Windows Vista you'll want to get the setup disk. It is required to install Windows and any drivers.
