v 3.0.12|VideoLAN
Open-source multimedia player
VideoLAN developed VLC for Windows 10, a desktop media player and streaming server. It is free and open-source and supports audio and video compression techniques. You can save files in various formats, such as DVD-Video, Video CD, and streaming protocols. This allows you to stream media from other computers and transcode multimedia files. This Windows 10 version is compatible with Microsoft's Metro design language as well as the Windows 10 graphical user interface. VLC version 3.0.10 is compatible with Windows 8.1.
CapabilitiesVLC can play most video file formats as a packet-based media player. This includes files that have been downloaded from a peer to peer network. These include MPEG transport streams and TS files that were extracted from high-definition video via a FireWire cable. This will allow you see the video's rendering progress while it is being played. VLC supports audio and video in libavcodec, libavformat and libavcodec, allowing you play H.264 and MPEG-4 files, as well as MXF files.
VLC can also be used to play DVDs and Blu Ray DVDs. VLC blocks the DVD region coding in RPC-1 firmware drives. It uses CSS encryption to play any DVD, RPC-1 or RPC-2 drive. You can also deinterlace, rotate, split, deinterlace, and mirror videos from these CD-ROMs using VLC's built in editing tools. You can also export videos as ASCII art or Windows DreamScene. VLC uses DirectX, similar to screencasting to display the video as desktop wallpaper.
Only VLC for Windows supports Direct Media Object. This allows you to use third party dynamic-link library software. It can project DVBC, DVBT, and DVBS channels. All these features can be accessed on other Windows computers if the program is saved to a USB flash drive, or another external drive. You can extend the program by using the Lua scripting languages. This will allow the program to play videos using AVCHD format, which is a common format for high-definition camcorders.
