Utility for assigning drive numbers free

Tweaking.com's Auto Assign Drive Letters, a Windows utility that allows you to disable or enable the default setting for assigning drive letter assignments, is free. You can toggle the feature on or off, just like GiliSoft Private Disk and EaseUS Partition Master Free. These programs deal more with partitioning and providing letters.

This tool is only compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 2003, Vista, and 7. It will default to the last letter assigned by an external USB or other drive. These operating systems automatically assigned letters to you, regardless of whether you requested them to. You can switch the utility on and off to determine how it should work.

Disabling and enabling features

If you still have an older Windows operating system, it may be difficult to assign drive letters when attaching a USB drive or external hard drive. Sometimes the auto-assign function is disabled by default. This could mean that you may not be able access the contents. Tweaking.com's Auto Assign Drive Letters allows you to toggle this setting on and off, depending on how it responds to you.

Registry settings need to be cleaned

Older Windows systems had a feature that allowed you to reserve drive numbers for certain drives. You can't claim the number back if you don't use the device anymore. Tweaking.com's Auto Assign Drive Letters offers a scrub tool that allows you to clear all numbers that were previously assigned from the registry for later reassignment.

Windows compatibility

The utility is limited to previous Windows versions that had the auto-assign setting. You won't need it for all Windows version. It is only compatible with Windows XP, 2003 and Vista. It may also work with Server 2008 in some cases.

Assigning drives to older systems

Tweaking.com's Auto Assign Drive Letters was created for those who still use older Windows operating systems at home or work. It doesn't have many applications and only a few buttons. It's still useful if you just need it to turn the auto-assign settings on or off or if you need all the assigned numbers to be scrubbed.
