Complete English vocabulary collection
The Oxford Dictionary of English is a constantly expanding dictionary that is supported by renowned experts. Although it is not free it contains the most complete English vocabulary and can be used by anyone who needs it.
FeaturesThe book has over 350,000 words. Each word has a meaning and a phrase attached to it. The research team is constantly looking for new words or slang to add the dictionary to help you find exactly what you are looking for.
Oxford has added a fuzzy word search function. This allows you to enter a word that you don't know how to spell and the software will find it for you. It can also replace letters to help the user find the right word if they are having trouble finding it.
It also includes keyword searches to determine whether what the user is looking for is part of another word. Although it does include sentence examples and audio pronunciations, it is not as comprehensive as the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary.
PresentationThe layout of Window's application is very clear. Each word can be broken down into smaller parts and given different definitions. Although everything is organized, it can be overwhelming.
AlternativesThe Oxford's Dictionary app has a subscription and free mobile edition. This is not the case with the Windows edition. Both have the same information but the phone app has ads and you cannot download words without paying.
Merriam-Webster, however, has fewer words, but is completely free. They also offer quizzes to help improve your English. The application design is cleaner than the Oxford program.
Rigorous vocabularyThe Oxford Dictionary is a useful tool for your library, if you need to find words you are looking for or have forgotten. Although the presentation is not perfect, it is sufficient to provide what you need. If you are learning English, however, you might want to use another dictionary.
