Media Player Classic is an open source media player that runs on 32-bit and 64 bit versions of Windows. MPC-HC can play Video CD, Super Video CD and other digital optical disk storage formats automatically. All necessary codecs have already been installed. The source code and program are based on the K-lite Codec Pack as well as the Combined Community Codec Pack. Its active forks include the Media Player Classic Home Cinema and Media Player Classic Black Edition. The MPC-HC community on the Doom9 forum maintains all versions of the free media players.

Media Player Classic is a media player that includes codecs for MPEG-2 video. It supports subtitles as well as codecs for MPEG-2 audio and MPEG-2 audio. The program also includes a MPEG splitter as well as a VCD/SVCD/XCD reader that supports playing VCDs and SVCDs. It all uses the DirectShow architecture. This means that the program has DirectShow decoding filters. This output is fast and high-quality, with postprocessing of MPEG-4 ASP and H.264 and Flash Video formats.

MPC-HC also supports DirectX Video Acceleration for Intel, NVIDIA, and ATI video cards when you're using H.264 and VC-1 codec, providing you hardware-acceleration for playback. All of these functions are compatible with SSE2-capable processors and Windows devices running Windows XP. It is lightweight at 13.5 MB and suitable for advanced users, professional developers and editors who play many file formats on a daily basis.
