MapWindow GIS is an open-source extensible geographic information system (GIS) that can be used to distribute data to others or to create and distribute custom spatial analysis tools.
The app supports standard GIS data visualization, as well as DBF attribute tables editing, Shapefile editing and data converters. MapWindow GIS supports dozens standard GIS formats, such as GeoTIFF, GeoTIFF, ESRI ArcInfo ASCII, and binary grids.
The interface is simple and straightforward. The default layout has a map area, legend pane, and a preview-map panel. There are buttons built into the toolbar that allow you create, save, open, and navigate project files, as well as navigate and print the map.
The navigation tools include functions such as pan, zoom-in, zoom-out, zoom-to-selected-layer, zoom-to-selected-shapes, and zoom-to-full-extents. A toolbar button allows you to add and remove data layers from the map. There is also a'selection tool'.
