Free Windows indie horror game

Ib by Kouri, a Japanese indie game, challenges you to escape from the madness of an arts museum. This classic RPG Maker title features semi-pixelated graphics, hand drawn character art, and a top-down view. The English translation preserves the original quality of the writing and puts the story at its forefront.

Art gallery adventure

You play Ib, a young girl who visits a museum with her family and wanders off from her parents.

After a while, the lights dim and she is left alone. She sets out to explore the strange location, solving puzzles and making friends, as well as trying to escape strange monsters hidden in the paintings.

The narrative is more important than the gameplay mechanics in OneShot, Bio Evil, and The Witch's House. The worldbuilding is captivating and immersive, drawing you into this surreal, frightening journey.

Story-driven gameplay

The controls, graphics, and gameplay were kept simple by the developer. You will see the world from a top-down perspective and interact with various objects to progress the plot.

The museum is haunting and full of deadly traps, puzzles, and hostile creatures that will chase you. There are no combat mechanics. You can only run away from the enemies to avoid dying.

There are seven different endings to this game that depend on your actions. Two companions will be found along the way. This is when friendship mechanics kick in.

The writing and pacing of the game are excellent, with well-spread horror elements as well as endings that reinforce the game's message.

Colorful characters

The story's meat lies in its characters. They all feel distinct and unique. Except for the title Ib, you will get to know the other members of her party, particularly Garry and Mary.

You will also find bits and pieces about Guertena Weiß. He is the man who founded the art gallery. His history reveals the hidden powers beneath the everyday exterior.

The gameplay is richer because of the interactions between characters and their backstories.

An immersive experience

Ib is deserving of all the praise and attention it has received. Although it is very simple mechanically and graphically, the writing packs a punch. The many endings available will keep you coming back for more. This is a must-play title, especially for those who are into Japanese horror.
