This rhythm action game lets you play as "The Boyfriend" and try to win "The Girlfriend". You match symbols to the beat of music to win. Each level has a different song and an enemy to fight. The primary goal is to defeat The Girlfriend's evil ex rockstar dad.

You'll be familiar with Friday Night Funkin' if you've played the cult rhythm game PaRappa the Rapper (DDR) or Dance Dance Revolution. You must match the music's beat with the arrows displayed on-screen over four weeks and 11 songs. Your overall score will increase with each successful match.

Friday Night Funkin' is a unique art show that combines kawaii-style character designs (think Animal Crossing), with graffiti text and backgrounds. Open-source means that you can modify the graphics and even create your own characters.

There are currently 13 characters available. Some characters can only be accessed via the debug menu. You can load them all by pressing '7'. The main protagonist, aged 19, is the Boyfriend. He always appears as the default player-character.

The game's soundtrack features a lot of upbeat electronic music. You can change the difficulty settings in the main menu. This doesn't affect music, but slows down the arrows that you must match.

Friday Night Funkin' was originally created for a Ludum Dare game jam, but it proved popular enough that it was reworked into a rhythm game. The creators wanted to add more weeks/songs, so the game should continue to be developed.

Friday Night Funkin' does one thing well. It is free and perfect for rhythm- or music-based gamers. It is constantly being updated and improved so you can expect more content as you play it.
