v 1.1.2|Rayll
Windows: Free psychological horror game
Fears To Fathom is Rayll's debut adventure horror game. It's free and is the first episode in a planned episodic series.
It has retro graphics and a retro look, similar to VHS video effects. You have been left alone overnight, while your parents work. Now you must overcome your fears to understand the strange events unfolding. These events are narrated by survivors. You'll occasionally receive text messages (non-playable characters) from NPCs, which allows you to continue the first-person game. Northbury Grove or Still Ridge are alternative options for psychological horror games.
The visualsThe graphics look almost like they are real and make you feel as though you are in the environment. The VHS effect creates a spooky atmosphere that is reminiscent of horror films like The Blair Witch Project.
CharactersYour parents are out of town and Miles, 14 years old, has left you alone at home overnight. You're at home, but you still have your mobile phone, which you can use to send text messages to your mum and other teens.
GameplayDespite the game running smoothly, the problem is that the game doesn't give you any clues about what you need next to move the plot forward. The hints that appear on the screen tend to disappear too quickly. You have to decide whether you want to hide until something happens, or if you want to put yourself in danger to make the story move.
The game's 'home alone' setting fits the tense atmosphere, but it is very difficult to see across a room due to the inability of the house to turn on the lights. There is no explanation for the apparent blackout.
Are there more?Yes, the developer plans on making this an episodic video game. You can donate to Rayll's efforts in creating future episodes before you download the game.
Our TakeFears to Fathom is a promising first episode. It could be a major player in the world of indie horror adventure games if it is supported by the gaming community. It's a smooth game with a tense atmosphere. Please give it a shot and consider supporting future episodes.
