How To Set Up A Desktop Icon

Desktop icon refers to the small bitmap representation of a program, folder, files, or device used to guide users when using a computer. It was created to make a user-friendly and self-explanatory environment. The desktop icons are used to easily navigate applications required by the user. Here are some tips on how to set up a desktop icon.

Step 1
Turn on the computer. Open the My Computer to navigate the programs or files you may want to set as a desktop icon or through Start Menu to find the application you desire to set up.

Choose an icon suitable for your needs. The icon is a bitmap representation that is directly link to your file, folder, program, or other application. The description will also be written under the icon to easily identify what the desktop icon is.

Right click the program, folder, or file you have chosen. This procedure will display a small window that allows you to, navigate, manage, cut, delete, paste, or send to, create shortcut, a file to a specific location, in this case, as a desktop icon.

Choose the Create Shortcut within the small window. This method will automatically create a copy of the chosen icon with an arrow underneath it. The arrow will be the distinction that the icon is a shortcut to the file, folder, or application. Click the left mouse button over this icon and drag it into the desktop.

You can also select the Send To within the small window to set up a desktop icon. Right click over the desired file, folder, or program icon. Choose the Send To option and select Desktop. This procedure will automatically generate a shortcut on your desktop.

Another option is to choose the desired icon and select the Copy option. Right click the chosen icon and a small window appears, select the Copy option and Paste in into the desktop. This will create an entire copy of the file, application, or folder.

For an additional way to create a desktop icon, choose the preferred icon, file, folder, application, etc. Left click over the icon (do not release the left click) and drag this icon over to the desktop.

Arrange the icons on the desktop after the procedure of copying, moving. Right click an empty space on your desktop and select the Arrange Icon by and choose the desired arrangement.
